Henric, who won Hernen last year, was a coach this year and wrote a little review:

“The third edition of the Hernen Beginners Tournament, mainly organized this year by Bart Jongsma and Max van den Ekart, was awesome! HVN showed up with seven fencers, five coaches and four organisation members, and we are very proud of all our fencers.

Five of our fencers made it through to the eliminations. Arnd, Jack and Pim all started fencing with HVN quite recently, but the fact that they got this far on their first tournament says enough. Thomas has been with us for about a year by now, but participated in a tournament for the first time. Not only did he make it 2nd out of the pools, he also got complemented for his style and technique. Ronin, our youngest participant (just turned 16!), whom I had the pleasure to coach this year, made a lasting impression. Not only did he cut (and thrust…) his way through the pool; he also made it all the way into the finals, taking 4th place in the end. Aphra has not been training with us for long and showed what a great potential she has, keeping her style clean and technical throughout all of her fights. Marianne should be proud of herself as well, because she stood up against guys two times her size.

All in all, this was a tournament with a lot of victories, and all our fencers are winners. They all just started fencing and gave their best, which is a future promise of to what heights they are going to grow. I hope that the Hernen Tournament is and will be a good encouragement for precisely this.

I would also like to compliment this year’s winner, and Izabele in particular, who took home the awesome Technical award! All clubs, MARS, AMEK, Zwaard en Steen and De Zwaardkring deliverd fantastic participants and toghether we made this a safe, instructive and ‘gezellig’ tournament for all our beginning participants.

For me, as a participant from last year, this edition was special as well. It was special to see many competitors from last year, against whom I fenced, who now were, just like me, coaching this year’s competitors. It is fantastic to see how the Dutch HEMA scene is growing, both how much better people get within a year’s time, but also how many new young fencers join the clubs all over the country. I would love to see where this is going and what the future brings us. It looks promising.
We’re looking forward to next year!”
